Archaeology Notes

HY51SW 10.03 54099 11822

A low concrete wall standing to about 90cm high is situated in rough grazing about 16m SW of the Battery Observation Post (HY51SW 10.02). Rectangular in shape with an expansion on the W side and entrance to the N and S it measures about 21.8m in length and is about 5m wide. There are the remains of what may have been an entrance porch at the N end. Steel pins are visible in the low wall head, these being used to fix the corrugated iron Nissen hut in place.

The hut is shown on a PRO Gun Record Book layout plan (WO 192/264) as for the N.A.A.F.I. No trace could be found immediately to the SE of what is shown as the staff hut for this section.

The extended Nissen hut is visible on RAF vertical air photographs (106G/Scot/UK 137, 4038-4039, flown 3 July 1946), with what may be the foundations of the staff hut immediately to the SE.

Visited by RCAHMS (DE, GS, SW), August 1999
