Archaeology Notes

HY50NE 31 5947 0871

Near the foot of the gully in the cliffs on the mainland side, by which access is obtained to the Brough of Deerness, a small round-ended naust some 5m long and 3m wide is contrived in the slope by a combination of excavation and drystone walling. It faces a boulder-strewn foreshore with no apparent batsto or batopptrekk.

K A Steedman 1980; RCAHMS 1987, visited August 1985.

Scheduled (with HY50NE 14) as Brough of Deerness, chapel and settlement.

Information from Historic Scotland, scheduling document datred 17 December 1991.

Activities

Orkney Smr Note (August 1985)

On the shore of Large Burra Geo, a short distance SW from

Brough of Deerness, at the foot of the cliffs is a small boat noost

about 5m by 3m, partially scooped out of the slope of the ground

and completed with drystone walls on both sides. Undatable

without excavation but its small size could point to a fairly

modern date. [R1]

It is rounded-ended. It faces a boulder-strewn foreshore

with no obvious batsto or batopptrekke.

Information from Orkney SMR (RGL) Aug 1985
