Archaeology Notes

HY41SW 9 c. 41 10.

In the first half of 1774 whilst cutting for peat at a depth of 2 feet were found two cow horns in, on and around which were found 300 coins of Canute and many fibulae and fragments of silver. The hoard was scattered before being brought to the notice of the proprietor, but the balance, consisting of the fibulae, the two horns and a lot of coins were presented to Thomas, son of Sir Lawrence Dundas. (Information from The Weekly Magazine 9 July 1774).

Forty-two of the coins are figured, with 2 fibulae and a horn, in Richard Gough's "Catalogue of the Coins of Canute", 1777.

The find spot, says JWC, as nearly as can be identified, is within a chain of a quarter of a mile WSW of Caldale (House).

G Barry 1805; Old Lore Miscellany 1909; Old Lore Miscellany 1910.

Anderson states that 'a number of penannular silver amulets were found' and that one of these, illustrated by Gough, is of the same form as those found at Skaill, Sandwick parish.
