Archaeology Notes

HY30SW 1.01 3349 0445

A rune-inscribed stone was found during the demolition, in 1953, of the 18th-century parish church which stood at the W side of the old Round Kirk. While the precise circumstances of the stone's discovery are not known, some of the material for the parish church was taken from the old Round Kirk (though the possibility remains that the runestone was brought from elsewere). The stone measures 250 x 12 x 64 mm and the inscription is 205 mm long. The runes are the full height of the narrow longitudinal side on which they are cut. The stone is presently kept in Orkney Museum, Tankerness House.

Batey, Jesch and Morris, 1993.
