HY22NE 36 Centred 27373 28999

A Chain Home Low radar station, with transmitter/receiver block at HY 2743 2906. Type 13 height finder radar used.

Information from Mr I Brown, October 1998

Two large buildings survive on the suimmit of Knowe of Crustan, the transmitter/receiver (Tx/Rx) block (HY 27432 29062 and what was the electricity generating house at HY 27373 28999. In addition, one of the other standing structures may have been an aerial gantry (HY 27489 28998).

Knowe of Crustan Chain Home Low Radar station is visible on RAF vertical air photographs (CPE/Scot/UK185, 3473-3474, flown 9 October 1946) and is situated at the summit of the hill about 250m N of the A966 road.

The air photographs show that the accommodation camp consisting of about sixteen huts, including Nissen types, was situated in the SW area of the site.

Visited by RCAHMS (DE, GS), August 2000

The radar station is also visible on a RAF WW II vertical air photograph (WL 10, frame 1.72, flown 4 July 1942), which shows the Tx blocks, engine rooms and huts all within a large sub circular barbed wire fence, though the common aerial for transmitting and receiving which was fitted to this station in early 1942 is not readily apparent.

Information from RCAHMS (DE) October 2008
