Archaeology Notes

HY20NW 18 2472 0643.

A number of loose stones, the possible remains of a cairn, about 30 feet N - S, 25 feet E - W and 3 feet high, lie 100 yards S. of the lighthouse at Point of Oxan.

RCAHMS 1946, visited 6 August 1929.

All that can be seen now at HY 2472 0643 is a vague grass covered mound, which was mutilated during the last war by the building of military installations. Mr A Towers (Information from Mr A Towers, Fillets, Graemsay, Orkney.) discovered two parallel dry stone walls here while ploughing, but was unable to indicate the exact spot on the ground. According to Mr H Mowatt,(Information from Mr H Mowatt, Oban Elu, Graemsay, Orkney.), the field is called the "Colm Kirk" and this mound is traditionally the site of St. Colm's Chapel. (HY20NW 14)

Visited by OS (NKB) 17 September 1964.
