The site of a heavy anti-aircraft battery is situated in a field by a steel mast, NE of the village hall. Nothing now remains of this battery except slight earthworks, the two gun positions lay each side of the mast.
The anti-aircraft battery consisted of two 3-inch guns and directing instruments.
J Guy; NMRS MS/810/4, 31-2, 34.
The heavy anti-aircraft battery is just visible on vertcial air photographs (106G/Scot/UK 98, 3288-3289, flown 18 May 1946), in a field to the S of a house annotated 'Grindwell' on the OS 1:10000 scale map (1973) and the more recently built 'Shuile-na-Mara'. All that can be seen on the photographs are the two earth-banked gun-emplacements with disturbed ground between the road and the gun site. No hutted camp for crew is visible on the photographs.
The battery was designated Z1 by the War Office (Public Record Office, AIR 2/4768, WO 166/7270).
