Archaeology Notes

HU44SW 1 4419 4020.

A hoard of 14 polished stone knives lying in a heap, was found in 1934, on a bare peaty patch on the western slope of the ward of Shurton, about 75' below the summit, where erosion by the elements had removed the turf and surface soil from an area c.60' by 25' to a depth of 2'.

Mr. Peter Moar found a small hoard of 5 polished stone knives on the same patch in May 1946 (?).

In 1932 an unusually fine polished stone adze was picked up on the same turfless patch and handed to Mr. Moar. The material of both knives and adze can be procured only from the Uyea Bjorgs, Roeness Hill (Neolithic Axe Factory - HU39SW 2).

P Moar 1948.

Mr. Henderson (Mr T Henderson, Curator, Lerwick Museum) stated that the site was occupied by a Post Office radio station, at HU 4420 4006, but Mr. Moar (Mr P Moar),located the find-spot to a patch of eroded peat land at HU 4418 4019. Mr Moar's location is much nearer the site described above than is Mr Henderson's.

The five knives found by Mr Moar and the stone adze are in Lerwick Museum.

Visited by OS(AA) 28th May 1968.
