Archaeology Notes

HU42NW 3 4258 2729.

HU 426 273. A small Neolithic house, 36 1/2' by 33' over walls from 6 1/2' to 7' in thickness, is set on a rocky knoll 300' above sea-level on the slopes of the Cliffs of Cunningsburgh about 100 yards to the westof the main road and 175 yards north of the Catpund Burn.

The inner and outer faces of the walling are marked in places by large earthfast stones in curvelinear alignment. An entrance passage, 7 3/4' long and 2 1/4' wide, pierces the wall on the SW and is marked at each of the four corners by an upright stone.

C S T Calder 1958.

HU 4257 2730. The remains of an oval house foundation generally as described by Calder, with walls 2.0m thick, and measuring 11.0m x 8.0m overall. Several large stones, some earthfast, in the centre, may be the remains of cells.

Visited by OS (AA) 8 May 1968.
