Archaeology Notes

HU15NE 1 1919 5856, 1931 5856 and 1922 5851

(HU 1925 5857) Tumuli (NR)

OS 6" map, Shetland, 2nd ed., (1903)

Three cairns. The NW cairn (HU 1919 5856) is about 30 feet diameter, considerably robbed and has no discernible features. The NE cairn (HU 1931 5856), 64 feet diameter and 4 feet high, has been most robbed of the three, probably for the nearby stell, and is now covered with turf through which many stones project. On the east side two stones (? part of kerb) 1 feet high stand 8 feet within the apparent cairn edge, and another stands just beyond the cairn edge on the north. Towards the NNE edge there is a group of three large stones, possibly part of a chamber. To the south of the group are various slabs but only one appears to be set. The south cairn (HU 1922 5851)(square) is turf-covered, 3 feet maximum height, its front apparently facing SW (then follows full description). There is no certain sign of a chamber or cist although a few larger slabs protrude through the turf.

A S Henshall 1963

These three cairns are as described and planned (1 only) by Henshall.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 19 June 1968.
