Archaeology Notes

HP50NE 8 5708 0501.

At HP 570 050, are the footings of a building, 44ft long, 22ft wide, with walls 3ft thick, with one end on the cliffshore. The east end is rounded. There is a circular enclosure on the south side and another on the west end. Possibly a Viking site.

Information from Shetland Museum Card Index (P Moar, June 1968).

At HP 5707 0501 are the turf-covered walls of a Norse type farmstead with S annexe, whose W end has been destroyed by the erosion of the cliff on which it stands. It now measures internally c. 15.0m E-W by 4.0m transversely with walls c. 1.5m thick faced internally with a discontinuous line of upright slabs. A modern build-up of stones crosses it at the cliff edge.

The annexe appears to be sub-circular, and outside this are two upright stones of yet another structure. The complex is similar in size, plan and construction to Underhoull (HP50SE 1) and HP50NE 4 and HP50NE 5 .

Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (NKB) 3 May 1969.
