Archaeology Notes

HP50NE 4 centred 5757 0611.

(HP 574 061). A Norse house lies north of Fjel (?Feall), Westing. It is a mere foundation, 50' to 60' long, with an interior width of about 12'. There are traces of outbuildings.

J Stewart 1954

At HP 5756 0613, on a gentle slope, are the turf-covered footings of a Norse farmstead, measuring internally 14.0m E-W, and 4.0m transversely. The inner wall face is visible as a discontinuous line of large slabs set on edge, protruding through the turf. The outer wall face is only occasionally visible but the wall would appear to be about 1.5m thick. There is an entrance in the W gable.

There are traces of outbuildings contiguous to the S side of the long-house, and 12.0m to the SW. The poor remains of field walls and cultivation terraces nearby appear to be contemporary.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (NKB) 2 May 1969.
