Broadford Extended settlement at the foot of Beinn na Caillich, the ribbon of development round Broadford Bay merging various cofting townships and later 20th century infill. Just three houses in 1843 , Broadford became an important post town, cattle market and ferry stop, with its own pier (1807-9, Telford/J. Gillespie Graham), limekiln (now a rubble lump) and inn. By the 1860s, it boasted some three dozen houses, 10 shops and a church, prompting Alexander Smith to write in 1865 'If Portree is the London of Skye, Broadford is its Manchester'.
