Archaeology Notes

NF73NE 9 7782 3684 to 7786 3679.

At c.NF 7781 3682 and c.NF 7785 3677 (see NF73NE 12) on the E bank of Abhuinn Hukarvat, S of Loch Druidibeg are the remains of two similar grass-covered cairns of rubble-stones and earth, with outer edges defined by upright stones, maximium height 0.6m which appear to have been hewn square. The NW cairn 1.2m high has a slight depression in the centre possibly a chamber but it is obscured by a later shieling hut. A further shieling is situated to the NW at the base of the cairn. The SE cairn, 1.4m high, has a similar oval depression in the top, with an upright stone standing 0.5m above the turf to the E of the depression. A shieling has been constructed in the tumble NE of the cairn.

Surveyed at 1:2500.

Visited by OS (N K B) 14 May 1965.

Re-sited by topographical surveyors during map revision, at NF 7782 3684 and 7786 3679, after archaeological survey.

Activities

Field Visit (4 March 2010)

Of the two grass- and heather-grown monuments recorded previously by the OS as cairns, that at NF 77825 36841 is probably the remains of a circular stone-walled building, quite possibly a wheelhouse. This survives as a mound measuring 9m in diameter over an intermittent boulder kerb most evident on the N and standing up to 0.7m in height. A subsquare shieling hut is built on its top. Another mound at NF 77862 36799, also possibly a wheelhouse, lies to the SE and measures some 11.6m in overall diameter by 1.3m in height, with traces of an external wall face 0.8m high comprising a large boulder footing supporting at least one laid course of masonry. One shieling hut is built on top of the mound, while another lies at its foot on the N, and there are at least two more immediately adjacent to the latter.

Change Of Classification (4 March 2010)
