Field Visit (20 June 1927)
Inscribed Lintels, &c., Crail.
(1) At 23 Castle Street is a 17th-century double-doorway. The lintel is inscribed I.D. I.A. C.I 1626 with a rose and thistle as terminals.
(2) At 31 High Street the wall towards the street bears a small panel with two shields. The dexter shield is charged: A fess checky between three mullets in chief and a mascle in base, for Lindsay of Wormiston; the sinister shield is charged: Within a bordure, on a bend between two thistle leaves, three buckles - a Leslie coat. The lower part of the panel bears the date and initials 17 H.L. 10.
(3) On the front of 16 High Street inserted two pediments, the lower inscribed: THE LORD IS [MY HELPE]R, the upper having on it the initials R.L. and E.C., for Robert Logan and Elizabeth Carstairs, with the date 1712.
(4) The lintel of the pend in the lower part of the ‘Custom House’ overlooking the harbour bears a panel on which is represented a fishing-smack enclosed by an inscription, now illegible. The south-eastern skew-put shows the initials R.W., for Robert Wood, and H.D. with crossed palm leaves; the south-west skewput the initials H.P. and an anchor.
(5) A house on the east side of Tolbooth Wynd has a pediment inscribed: GODS BLESSING IS MY LAND AND RENT.
(6) In the wall on the west side of Castle Street is a stone having carved on it a cooper's knife and compasses and the initials and date I.A. I.P. 1643.
(7) A pediment on the west side of Crosscauseway has the date 1632 and a monogram composed of the initials T.A.G.S. for Thomas Alexander and Grizel Scougall.
(8) In the west garden wall of Kirkmay House is a pediment with the initials I.M. And K.P. and the date 1619. In the north wall of the house a lintel, which is built in upside down, bears I.M. 1619.
(9) In the public garden near the station is a stone with the initials T.M. I.P., the date 1703 and a representation of what are perhaps joiners' tools.
(10) In Shoregate are: at No. 13 a stone dated 1632; at No. 22 a stone with a figure of St. Adrian; over the doorway of "The Old House" near the churchyard the date 1686.
