(ND 4691 9140) Standing Stone (NR)

OS 6" map (1900)

A standing stone 14' - 14' 6" high with some packing at the base. At 3' above ground level, it is 2' 6" wide and 18" thick, thickening to 21-22" as it rises. Nothing was found digging at the stone (G Low 1879).

G low 1879; RCAHMS 1946, visited 1929.

Activities

Field Visit (21 April 1994)

This ring cairn was visited during the Orkney Barrows Project. It measures 4.5m in diameter and 0.5m in height. Some stone kerb was visible. The cairn is visible to the W and NW for up to 500m.

Orkney Smr Note

..... saw a large erected stone about 16ft above ground, probably monumental, though tradition is silent about it, and by digging nothing was found that could with certainty prove this . [R1]
