Archaeology Notes

ND47NE 10 4628 7807.

Stone structure and traces of midden material 90yds E of the head of Hunni Geo, Muckle Skerry (information from A Black, lighthouse keeper). RCAHMS 1946

ND 4628 7807. A denuded mound which measures about 17.5m ENE-WSW by 10.5m NNW-SSE and is 0.5m high at its highest point. Several thin upright slabs project through the peat, but only two (A and B) are definitely in situ, the tallest 'B' 0.6m with a gabled top near the E end. Just shoving through the peat in a curve around the E end are a few slabs on edge, possibly the remains of an Orkney-Cromarty stalled cairn. Surveyed at 1/10,000.

Some 20.0m to the W is an ill-defined grassy mound 8.5m in diameter and 0.3m high with a slab on edge visible in the E arc. Classification uncertain.
