Activities

Field Visit (20 July 1995)

NS95SE 32 9764 5467

The remains of this cottage are set into a scoop on the N-facing hillside immediately S of one of the spoil tips of Haywood Pit No.10 (NS95SE 36). It measures 7.3m from N to S by 4.9m transversely within walls 0.6m in thickness which survive to a height of 1.1m. The entrance was probably on the E. There is a fireplace at each end of the building and there is an outshot, 4.3m long built against the N end wall. The building is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Lanarkshire 1864, sheet xx), and remained roofed at least until the 1913 edition of the map. The Name Book describes it as 'a small cothouse, one storey in height, thatched and in good repair' (ONB 1864).
