Ayr was an important fighter station for the defence of central Scotland and later an Armament Practice Camp. Since the war, the now disused aerodrome has been partly absorbed by Prestwick's new subsidiary runway and a housing estate. One hangar survives.

Activities

Note (21 July 2022)

The Pillbox Study Group report that 18 fighter aircraft dispersal pens, each for two aircraft with earth bunds, are shown on a map of airfield held by the Royal Navy Research Archive.

At least eight air raid shelters at depicted on the OS 1:2500 map (1959).

The airfield has been redeveloped for housing and it is thought that none remain.
