Architecture Notes

ARCHITECT: James Parr & Partners 1983-8

General Accident world HQ, situated on N-facing side of a hill bounded to S by the M90, and to N and W by Necessity Brae, on former 18 ha of land belonging to Pitheavlis hill farm. Dug into the slope, and conceived as a series of 'drawers' pulled out from the hillside. Uses new design of 'Top-Servicing' to promote flexibility. All staff departments open-plan. Integrated sports complex and staff hostel. Foyer tapestry by Samantha Ainsley. Batik panels by Norma Starszakowna. Ceramic wall featuring names of employees by Mike de Haan. Total cost: #30m. Winner of RIBA Award, Saltire awards for artwork.

RIAS 1987; R Carr 1988
