Archaeology Notes

ND34SW 117 31648 41270.

This well-preserved limekiln has been built into the foot of an E-facing slope 125m W of Watenan farmsteading. Roughly circular on plan, the kiln measures about 5.5m from E to W by 5.2m transversely overall and still stands to a height of 2.4m on the E. The kiln-pot, the lower part of which is partly blocked with rubble, measures 2.6m in diameter within a reddened and fire-cracked drystone rubble wall, and the splayed draw-hole is on the E.

The kiln is depicted on both the 1st and 2nd editions of the OS 6-inch map (Caithness 1877, sheet xxix; 1907, sheet xxix); it is annotated 'limekiln' on the earlier map.
