This is a grassy mound 43ft in diameter and about 4ft high. It was found to be a kiln when excavated by Sir Francis Tress Barry.
RCAHMS 1911, visited 1910.
A mound, as described above. It has a slight depression in the centre, and in the SW segment quantities of burnt stones are visible.
Resurveyed at 1:2500.

Despite its classification from excavation as a kiln, Thorny Hillock (name verified) would appear to be a typical burnt mound, situated at the edge of boggy ground. The mound, generally as described, is roughly U-shaped with the open end facing the wet area, though this effect is enhanced by the old excavation trench. Burnt stones are exposed here and there in the mound.
