(ND 2960 6242) Thorny Hillock (Mound) (NR)

OS 6" map, Caithness, 2nd ed., (1907)

Thorny Hillock (NAT) Kiln (NR) (Site of)

OS 6" map, (1959)

This is a grassy mound 43ft in diameter and about 4ft high. It was found to be a kiln when excavated by Sir Francis Tress Barry.

RCAHMS 1911, visited 1910.

A mound, as described above. It has a slight depression in the centre, and in the SW segment quantities of burnt stones are visible.

Resurveyed at 1:2500.

Visited by OS (N K B), 6 September 1965.

(ND 2960 6242) Thorny Hillock (NAT)

OS 6" map (1970).

Despite its classification from excavation as a kiln, Thorny Hillock (name verified) would appear to be a typical burnt mound, situated at the edge of boggy ground. The mound, generally as described, is roughly U-shaped with the open end facing the wet area, though this effect is enhanced by the old excavation trench. Burnt stones are exposed here and there in the mound.

Visited by OS (N K B), 18 May 1982.
