Archaeology Notes

NS95NW 98 9295 5602

Nothing now remains of two kilns (CSW 2869) shown on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Lanarkshire 1859, sheet xiv) as disused, with a single kiln depicted on the 2nd edition map (Lanarkshire 1897, sheet xiv). The mortared ashlar footings of a rectangular building (CSW 2868) corresponds with one of two buildings shown on the 2nd edition map adjacent to the kiln. An inscription carved into a window sill in the N wall reads:

PASS NOT BY BUT SHED A TEAR JOCKY SHIELS AINCE DWELLIT HERE.

There is a small disturbed bing to the E of the building and an area of subsidence hollows (CSW 7005, NS 9300 5585) to the S. A small bell pit (CSW 7006, NS 9297 5611) is situated beside the Craig Burn to the N of the building.

(CSW 2868, 2869, 7005, 7006)
