Archaeology Notes

NO49NW 33 c. 44 99

Possibly on map sheet NJ40SW.

This boat was discovered in 1845 and brought to shore. The location of its discovery was not recorded, and it does not appear to survive.

NMRS, MS/736/1.

In about 1845 a boat was discovered in the mud of the loch-bed and brought to shore. It was 26' (7.9m) long and the flat bottom measured 8' (2.5m) in beam. The form of the boat was 'Sharp at both ends, otherwise coble built' and it was 'substantially built' of caulked oak planks secured by 'iron bolts well made and skilfully rivetted'. It was not a logboat.

The location of the discovery is not accurately recorded but Michie attributes it to the last period of occupation of the castle NO49NW 16, in the early 17th century. He also mentions the frequent discovery of boat-planking in the waters of the loch.

J Stuart 1868; J G Michie 1910; R J C Mowat 1996.
