The distillery of Allt-a-Bhainne, which translates from the Gaelic as 'Burn of Milk', was built in 1975 by the Chivas Brothers company as a source of single malt whisky for use in blending. The distillery lies on the northern slopes of Ben Rinnes drawing its water from a nearby spring.
Built to a modern design, the distillery buildings are largely harled with the upper parts hung with tiles. Four small pagodas on the roof of the still house echo the traditional distillery design. With its largely-automated production processes, this distillery can produce up to 4.5 million litres of whisky a year, employing a staff of only nine. The whisky is transported by tanker to warehouses in Keith for casking and maturing.
