Field Visit (9 September 1992)

NS86SE 4.06 887 633

The 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Lanarkshire 1899, sheet ix) depicts three rows of cottages along the road flanking the NW edge of Benhar Colliery, from NS 8847 6296 to NS 8920 6370. Twenty short terraces are depicted, along with a Mission Hall and a Post Office. The village survives, largely unaltered, until the revised edition of the OS 6-inch map (Lanarkshire 1921, sheet ix, resurveyed 1910) but RAF aerial photographs show it had been demolished by 1949 (541A/467, 4380-1). The ground to the NW of the road, on which most of the cottages stood, has since been opencast and backfilled.
