This was a RAF Sector Operations Room and also Gun Control Room. The book on 226 HAA battery (Thomson) refers to it being at 'Quoydandy Loan'.

Information via e-mail to RCAHMS from M Briscoe, 25 June 2004

A large brick and reinforced concrete building situated to the N of Inganess Road and W of Berstane Road. A second smaller structure is situated on the NW side of the building. Orginally set within a high fenced enclosure much of which has now been vandalised.

Until recently the building retained many of the original fittings relating to communications, but since a sale it has been systematically stripped and vandalised and is now both internally and externally being used as a dumping ground. The main structure of the building however, remains substantially complete.

The building was the main direction and communication centre for the defence of the Orkney Islands.

WW II RAF vertical air photographs (NLA 16, 611-612, flown 22 June 1941) show this building in the early stages of construction and additionally two accommodation camps are visible on these photographs(HY40NE 28.01) close-by.

Visited by RCAHMS (DE, GS), August 1999 and 2000
