Archaeology Notes

ND39SW 43 3061 9343

This anti-aircraft battery, which is depicted on the latest edition of the OS map (OS 1:10000 map, 1978) is situated on the opposite side of the road to Rinnigil from Ore farmstead. Nothing now survives of the battery apart from four slight bumps in a field along with a spread of concrete lumps.

Visited by RCAHMS (DE) May 1996.

The World War II heavy anti-aircraft battery consisted of four emplacements mounting 4.5-inch static guns (1942). The battery was also supplied with a mobile radar unit, GL Mk II, the site of which lay to the SE of the gun-emplacements.

In 1942 the battery was manned by 59 Brigade (PRO WO 166/7270).

The accommodation camp for the crew was adjacent to the B9047 road.

The site has been cleared relatively recently as the four emplacements are visible on vertical air photographs taken in 1987 (All Scotland Survey 621/87 [9305], flown 1987).

Information from RCAHMS (DE), February 2005
