Aerial Photographic Interpretation (4 March 2022)

This enclosed settlement, which has been recorded as cropmarking on oblique aerial photographs (RCAHMSAP 1992), is located on gently sloping ground on the NE flank of Cairn Connell Hill. The settlement is trapezoidal on plan and measures a maximum of 60m from ENE to WSW at its broad SSE end (only 49m at the NNW end) by 52m transversely within a ditch averaging about 3m in breadth There is an entrance on the SSE side set towards the SW corner. There are at least five roundhouses in the interior, four recorded as ring grooves or partial ring grooves and the fourth as a circular dark mark.

A second enclosed settlement (NX06NW 42) has been recorded as cropmarking immediately to the N, whilst directly to the NE and E is an unenclosed settlement of roundhouses and a possible souterrain (NX06NW 43).
