NT15NE 51.01 NT 1889 5753 Coal Mine

NT15NE 51.02 NT 1855 5728 Coal Mine; Shafts; Subsidence pits

There are two groups of coal workings, including shafts, subsidence

pits and spoil heaps spread along the S part of Walstone Muir which overlooks the River North Esk. The main group consists of seven shafts, one of which is adjacent to a small spoil heap.

That at NT 1886 5764 has been deliberately filled in and all that remains is an area of grey earth and rubble.

250m SW, is a second group of shafts with several subsidence pits. The shafts are depicted on the OS 1:10,560 map, (1968).

Both groups of mines and shafts are connected by a built track which runs across the moor ultimately running beneath a house and E to the small mine at NT 1935 5777 (NT15NE 53).
