(ND 0339 6029) Torr na Craoibhe (Mound) (NR)

OS 6" map, Caithness, 2nd ed., (1907)

A large knoll, part of the N side of which seems to have been removed many years ago. A house of some kind, which looked like a chapel with a fence round it, is supposed to have stood at one end, but both house and fence have long since been removed.

Name Book 1873.

An artificial, flat-topped grassy mound, 130ft in diameter and 6 to 8ft high, is surrounded by the foundations of cottages.

RCAHMS 1911.

Torr na Craoibhe is a shapeless, grass-covered stony mound, 2.4m maximum height. The grass-covered footings of a building can be seen on top of the mound.

Resurveyed at 1:2500.

Visited by OS (N K B) 6 November 1964.

(ND 0337 6030) Torr na Craoibhe (NAT) Mound (NR)

OS 1:10,000 map, (1975)

The mound is as described by the previous field investigator; whether it is wholly artificial cannot be determined. There are no diagnostic features to enable classification, but it is possibly a homestead.

Visited by OS (J B) 21 September 1981.
