(ND 0661 6019) Big Island (NAT) Cairn (NAT)

OS 6" map, (1959)

There is a hut circle on the possibly artificial island in Loch Calder, which is said to have been a robber's dwelling about 1600.

F O Blundell 1913; Name Book 1872.

Big Island is now almost completely submerged apart from a small pile of stones about 4.0m in diameter, showing above the water. No boat available for close examination.

Visited by OS (R D) 3 November 1964 and (I S S) 16 March 1972.

Loch Calder is now a reservoir and the water level has been raised. Though the level was relatively low at the time of investigation, the island was submerged.

Visited by OS (N K B) 18 September 1964.
