Archaeology Notes

NO12SW 250 119 236.

In April 1992 a small scale excavation was carried out at the rear of 62/64 High Street, Perth. A limited survey of the fabric of the standing building was also undertaken.

Excavation revealed a substantial rubble cored wall 1m to the S of the present back wall. A well-constructed cobbled surface abutted the wall on its S side. The position of the drystone wall indicates that the High Street has shifted its position towards the N since the medieval period. This theory is strengthened by a study of the structure of the E wall of 62 High Street. Here it is clear that the present facade is the latest of three and that the building has developed over 2m towards the N since the initial construction.
