Archaeology Notes

ND04SE 2 0788 4234.

(ND 0788 4234) At Backlass, some 200 yds W of the shepherd's house and immediately outside the garden wall, are remains which appear to be those of a stone circle. Only a segment towards the N exists, consisting of five stones apparently in situ and one displaced. The stones are for the most part pointed and average 2ft in height, 2ft in breadth, and 1ft 3ins in thickness. A large displaced stone 6ft 6ins long, 3ft 3ins broad, and 1ft 5ins thick, is lying half upon the eastmost stone. The diameter of the circle has been about 22ft. A large number of pointed stones in the adjacent walls seem to have been removed from the monument.

RCAHMS 1911, visited 1910.

The remains of this stone circle are as described by the RCAHMS.

Visited by OS (W D J) 15 April 1961.
