Field Visit (24 February 1992)

NT60NE 44 6549 0808.

A homestead, rig, several field banks and two quarries are situated in gently-sloping ground some 200m to the NW of Martinlee Sike on the N of the public road to Hawick. The site lies in rough grass and an OS air photograph shows the faint traces of rig cultivation (OS vertical air photographs 024/299, 1968) at c. NT 6545 0808. A low sinuous bank defines a rectilinear field on the NW, NE and SE, encompassing an area of about 2.5 ha (250m by 100m). On the SW a low grass-covered bank that runs alongside the public road and extends beyond the SE side of the field, is of a different character, with a more regularcourse and an earthen matrix.

There are also two small quarries within the area of the field. The homestead which lies within this field, comprises an enclosure and two house-platforms. The enclosure is slightly scooped into the slope on its NE side and measures some 16.5m from NW to SE by 11m transversely within low grassy banks on the S and W spread to 2m in thickness with an entrance on its SW. An oval platform, which is attached to the SE side of the enclosure, is cut into the slope to a depth of 0.5m and measures 6m from WNW to ESE by 4.5m transversely. A second platform which occupies a terrace on the NE of the enclosure, displays the traces of a hut-circle, measuring 7m in diameter within a low grassy bank spread to 1.2m in thickness and 0.25m in height with an entrance on the SW.
