Archaeology Notes

NC96SE 41 9740 6375.

At NC 9740 6375, on the SW edge of natural drainage in a N-facing hillside, is a crescent-shaped burnt mound, 9.5 by 8.0m across and 0.8m high. Animal scrapes in the peat cover show blackened earth and friable fragments of stone.

Surveyed at 1:10,000.

Visited by OS (J M) 11 August 1981.

This burnt mound was noted during a pre-afforestation survey of Sandside Estate. It is visible as a grass-covered, crescent-shaped mound about 3m across, on a heather-covered slope.
