Archaeology Notes

NT26NW 48 from 2000 6918 to 2179 6999. RX 1.

Formerly RRX 501.

NT 2000 6918 to NT 2009 6922 No trace.

NT 2009 6922 to NT 2042 6936 Cropmark.

NT 2042 6936 to NT 2062 6944 No trace.

NT 2062 6944 to NT 2074 6950 5 degree change of direction. In March 1964 the tenant of Parkside was engaged in removing what appeared to be road bottoming. The task was never completed and a cropmark is beginning to show.

NT 2074 6950 to NT 2110 6966 Low, broad ridge faintly seen, running through shallow valley.

NT 2120 6971 to NT 2147 6983 The road must have angled upwards along the slope below Dovecot Park Road and passed through the grounds of 303 Lanark Road (NT 213 698). The land here has been quarried in the past then filled in so that remains are unlikely. The line probably emerged at 321 Lanark Road where a hump in the driveway may be a trace, and crossed the modern Lanark Road.

NT 2147 6983 to NT 2151 6990 Ruinous building and railway obliterate route.

NT 2151 6990 to NT 2157 6993 No sign of road. Bank and small field adjacent appear artificial.

NT 2157 6993 to NT 2176 6998 Road descends on terrace followed by another terrace. A short zig-zag approach appears to have been made to river crossing.

Letter and map from T H Holbert, 1 Thomson Drive, Currie to Ordnance Survey, 4 May 1964.
