Built in the 1960s by Glasgow Corporation, the Red Road development was designed by Sam Bunton and Associates. The 20-acre site contained the highest multi-storey flats in Europe, consisting of six 31-storey blocks, two of 27-storeys and one of 3-storeys. By the 1980s the buildings had fallen into disrepair. Following renovation, they were converted into student accommodation, executive apartments and a YMCA.

High Flats, Red Road, 1962, Sam Bunton
26- to 31-storey, steel-framed flats, built by the City's Direct Labour Organisation. When constructed, they were the tallest flats in Europe. 1980s refurbishment includes vigorous coloured patterns on elevations. Having acquired a notorious reputation, now to be demolished.

Five 31-storey towers and two 27-storey slabs - at this completion, the highest housing blocks in Europe. The climax of Glasgow Corporation's drive to 'give the people homes', and the fulfilment of Sam Bunton's quest for an extravagantly tall, skyscaper-like expression for mass housing. Asbestos-clad, steel-framed structural design highly unusual in a housing context. (Fig. 4.58).
