Barngliesh, where the remains of an old building appear, may perhaps be a contraction of the French, 'Bernard eglise' - Bernard Church.

Statistical Account (OSA) 1795

A chapel formerly stood here (to the W of the Hall Burn, some 700m N of Barngliesh). The name 'Hall' or 'Ha' Burn is said to be derived from 'hallowed' or 'holy'.

There is no trace of any building at this site. The OSA and the Ordnance Survey Name Book (ONB) may be referring to the same structure.
