NY27SE 12 c. 283 714.

A primitive, hammer-flanged, EBA flat bronze axe, found on Hayfield Farm, NY 283 714, c. 1880. In Dumfries Museum.

Enquiries at Hayfield farm proved negative. Axe in Dumfries museum.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 18 October 1967

(Flat axe of Glenalla type). Thornhill, Morton, Dumfriesshire. Single find. Flat axe, rough surface, green-brown patina, sides hammered; length 162mm, butt 23mm, cutting edge 71mm, weight 320 gms. Dumfries Mus. (1948.50).

PK Schmidt and CB Burgess 1981.

Schmidt and Burgess state no grounds for assigning this axe to a provenance of 'Thornhill'; it may have reached Dumfries Museum through the Grierson Collection at Thornhill.
