Archaeology Notes

NX98SE 20 c. 99 80.

Two 'Roman' urns containing bones were dug up near Locharbriggs, during road improvements "on the west side of the road, near to the two bridges, but on the end nearest the village," and were purchased by Mr Johnstone, on the 19th March 1827.

The base of the larger urn measured 6 inches: the other urn was recovered entire and measured 2 1/2 inches in diameter and 2 inches high. In two places, on opposite sides of the urn, are four small holes, forming a half- inch square. "Many ancient Roman and British weapons" have been found at or near this spot.

T Johnston 1825-7

The smaller urn described above seems to have been a Bronze-Age incense cup.
