(NX 8468 8567) Castle (NR) (Remains of)
OS 6" map (1957)
"The Place of Snade", said to have belonged to the Hays of Yester in 1573 (J Gladstone 1951): All that remains of this castle is a small area of rising ground artificially steepened on the NE, E and S sides. Any defences on the W have disappeared under modern land usage.
There are the tumbled remains of an old wall around the NE side of the top but this is unlikely to have been part of the structure of the castle. There is also a relatively modern retaining wall on this NE side. The E half of the interior is flat and featureless but the W half is irregular with much stone beneath the turf. This is probably where the castle stood.
The barony of Snaid was created c. 1314. (R C Reid 1948)
Remains of walls were said to be extant in 1856. (Name Book 1856) Surveyed at 1:2500.
