(NX 7543 4873) Mote (NR)

OS 6" map (1957)

A motte situated on the SE side of a small stream flowing in the Abbey Burn. Standing 12' high it has been constructed on a square plan, the summit measuring 45' along two sides, and 47' and 42' on the others, being somewhat broken down on the SSW angle. It is surrounded by a ditch best preserved on the E side measuring c 26' wide across the top and 5' - 6' deep, which opens onto the stream on either side. On the N half of the summit is a semi-elliptical depression coming almost to the edge of the scarp and measuring some 25' wide with a chord of the same length.

Coles states that this was the site of the old mansion-house of the Broughtons of Cally, inhabited when Dundrennan Abbey flourished.
