(NX 6836 5090) A Viking period grave, found in St Cuthbert's Churchyard, contained the remains of a double-edged iron sword with a wooden scabbard, a penannular bronze brooch, and a small bead, possibly of jet. These finds are in Kirkcudbright Museum.

In reviewing the evidence for viking settlement in Galloway, Scott (1963) considers the viking burial to be erroneously located to the present St Cuthbert's parish church (NX65SE 305) in St Mary Street, Kirkcudbridght. He considers the correct location of the find to be at the site of St Cuthbert's church (NX65SE 30 6903 5119) to the NE of the burgh.
