Archaeology Notes

NX65NE 17 6709 5902.

(NX 6708 5903) Some 30 yards SE of the cairn NX65NE 3 is a small cairn-like heap of stones, measuring about 12' in diameter, and adjacent to it another which has been excavated.

RCAHMS 1914, visited 1911

There are two groups of peat and heather-covered stone mounds situated on the south slopes of Kirkconnell Moor, at 450ft OD. They are composed of small angular stone with no trace of kerbing, and they lie in an irregular pattern on the hillslope. The ground is heather-covered and there is no evidence of field plots, lynchets or hut circles.

Centred NX 6709 5902. A group of three mounds occupying an area of approx 1/3 hectare; the largest is 3.0m diameter and 0.6m high.

Centred NX 6705 5891. A group of mounds occupying approx 1/2 hectare of a level shelf on the side of a ridge. They average 4.5m diameter and 1.0m high.

Visited by OS (TRG) 16 June 1977

Activities

Field Visit (3 May 1990)

The area around cairn NX65NE 3 has been ploughed and afforested and the cairns previously described could not be located on the date of visit and have presumably been destroyed by these operations.

Visited by RCAHMS (DCC) 3 May 1990.
