Archaeology Notes

NX 580 905. Elliptical foundation 10.06m x 6.40m.

M L Ansell 1969

NX 580 904. This particular feature was not identified, though it is probably one of about 20 stone clearance heaps that extend over 2.5 hectares of gentle E-sloping open moorland at 700 ft OD.

None of these heaps has a distinctive form and they vary in shape from sub-circular to oval; the given dimensions would be typical of several. Their average height is 0.5m. They are random in distribution, form no overall pattern, and no trace of lynchets or occupation was found. Though of slightly larger size, these cairns are similar to many clearance groups in this region (c/f NX98NE 5).

Visited by OS (JRL) 8 February 1978

NX 570 908 (centre) An area of 1000 acres surrounding Braidenoch Hill was inspected and numerous previously unrecorded sites were located.

A full report has been lodged with the NMRS.

This group of clearance cairns was noted during a pre-afforestation survey. They range in size up to 8m by 5.5m and stand up to 0.5m in height.
