Archaeology Notes

NX54NE 2 5860 4965.

(NX 5860 4965) Human Remains found AD 1905 (NAT).

OS 6" map (1910)

A skull was found at the foot of an old ash tree in 1905, when workmen were making a lake at Knockbrex. No relics were found in conjunction with it. It is suggested that it may have been the skull of one of the Gordons of Knockbrex who were executed in 1666 as Covenanters, and had their heads displayed over the Meikle Yett at Kirkcudbright.

Reference (2011)

The skull of an elderly female was found at the foot of an old ash tree near the stables, in some peaty ground, when workmen were making a lake. As with Glenkerry [34] and Moorscalloch [40], this is yet another Scottish find which has been tenuously suggested to have had a Covenanting-period connection - in this case as being from the victim of an execution in 1666.
