Archaeology Notes

NX46NW 32 c. 432 659

'...found on the farm of Bents (NX 434 673) or Larg (NX 432 659), not far from Kirrochtree (NX 422 660), in the grounds of which I saw it. It is made of a single oak tree, and is about 11 feet long, 3 feet 2 inches wide, and 20 inches deep.'

A Mitchell 1865.

(Formerly located at NX 43 66; amended to NX c. 432 659). Mitchell notes that a logboat was found before 1863 'on the farm of Bents or Larg, not far from Kirrochtree'. The circumstances of the discovery are not stated and it does not appear to survive.

The boat measured about 11' (3.4m) long by 3'2" (1m) 'wide' and 1'8" (0.5m) 'deep' when it was inspected in the grounds of what is now Kirroughtree House Hotel (NX 4222 6604). The timber was identified as 'oak'.

The area is one of cultivated grassland and forested hills at an altitude of about 35m OD.

A Mitchell 1865; R J C Mowat 1996.
