(NX 3434 4619) Druchtag Castle (NR) (Site of)

OS 6" map (1957)

(No information found in ONB)

No evidence has been found for the existence of a castle at this site. M'Kerlie states that the lands of Druchtag mentioned in 1577 and later, formed part of the Monreith estate. They were valued at ?88 13 4 in 1667 (H E Maxwell 1889). Anderson (1927) suggests that some dressed stones in the walls of the byre at Boghouse may have come from Druchtag Castle, but they more probably came from the chapel noted on NX34NW 3.

P H M'Kerlie 1870

There is nothing visible on the ground at the published site which is now under pasture. The farmer at Boghouse (Mr McTier) has not encountered foundations whilst ploughing at the published site but has from time to time uncovered very black soil. The origin of the dressed stones in the walls of the byre at Boghouse is uncertain.

Visited by OS (BS) 13 May 1977.
