Archaeology Notes

HU33NE 9 35 37.

A Viking armlet, 2 1/2" in internal diameter, of slender gold rods intertwined to give a chain-like appearance, was found on the island of Oxna, some years before 1913, by James Fullerton, Hamnavoe, Burra, who was then a boy.

The armlet lay on the surface of a bare patch which had been stripped of 18" to 20" of soil. It was impossible to say whether it has been deliberately buried.

G Goudie 1913; H Schetelig 1940

It was purchased by the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS) in 1912-13.(FE 71).
